Exercise and cognitive-social engagement together were linked to the most years free of cognitive impairment, and neither replaced the other.
People who did structured exercise and also stayed cognitively and socially engaged could expect 24.7 years free of cognitive impairment from age 50. For those low on both, the figure was 17.5 years. The estimates come from four long-running aging studies in Asia, North America and Europe, whose repeated surveys the researchers harmonized. The mixed groups are telling: high exercise with low engagement reached 23.2 years, while the reverse reached only 20.1. In these data one habit did not make up for the other, but as an observational study it cannot prove the habits themselves added the years.
