A vitamin K2 cream made the lines at the corners of the mouth slightly shallower in women after eight weeks than a cream without it.
A face cream containing vitamin K2 slightly smoothed wrinkles and improved skin elasticity in a small study of women. The idea behind it: when the power plants of the cells work less well, skin ages faster. Vitamin K2 in the form called MK-7 is thought to support them.
Thirty-six women aged 35 to 60 took part, and 30 finished. For eight weeks, they applied the vitamin K2 cream twice a day to one half of their face and neck. The other half got the same cream without the active ingredient. The side was chosen at random, and neither the women nor the testers knew which was which. On the vitamin K2 side, the lines running down from the corners of the mouth were 8.6 percent less deep after four weeks than on the comparison side. After eight weeks, the gap was just under 5 percent. In lab tests, skin cells made more energy with vitamin K2.
The advantage shrank toward the end. The researchers link this to the Chinese New Year holidays in the middle of the study. The maker of the ingredient paid for it. Whether the cream works in men or over longer periods was not tested.
