This cell study hints that low glutathione may leave aging neurons more vulnerable to damage.
When brain cells run low on glutathione, the body's main antioxidant, amyloid stress pushes them toward an iron-driven form of cell death. In lab-grown human neuron-like cells with Alzheimer's-linked mutations, draining glutathione triggered fat damage, iron buildup and death. For anyone who has heard that glutathione fades with age, this shows one way that loss could matter for the brain. These were cells in a dish, and no one has tested whether raising glutathione changes this in people.
